ROLE : LEGAL ASSISTANT
ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION:
Justice for Our Neighbors is a non-profit that welcomes immigrants into our communities by providing low-cost or free, high-quality immigration legal services, education, and advocacy. We provide high-quality immigration legal services, create a welcoming atmosphere for immigrants, educate others regarding the issue of immigration, and advocate lasting policy change on a local, state and federal level.
Austin Region JFON is related to National Justice For Our Neighbors (NJFON), founded in 1999 by the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).
OVERVIEW: We are currently seeking a motivated and compassionate Full-time legal assistant for our Austin office located at 2105 Parker Lane Austin, Texas 78741.
ADMINISTRATIVE
-
Opening, organizing, and closing case files; maintaining in office spreadsheets.

Substantial data entry for client database; compiling data into case software.

Answering office phones; scheduling potential clients to clinics; scheduling client and attorney appointments; correspondence with current clients.

Handling office incoming mail; handling office outgoing mail.

Coordinating office calendars and case deadlines.

Maintain and clean and organized work space.

CASE ASSISTANCE
-
Preparing and submitting petitions/application; filling out and revising forms using INSZoom.
-
Preparing files and forms for client meetings.
-
Formatting and organizing petition packets; scanning and copying all filed documents.
-
Translating Spanish documents to English.

Translating client-attorney meetings; assisting staff attorney with interviewing minor clients.

Research for asylum/victim cases.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATNG
-
Point of contact for new volunteers; matching volunteers to case assignments and other opportunities.

Scheduling, monitoring, and tracking volunteer hours.
-
Developing and promoting new volunteer opportunities in coordination with the Legal Director.

COMMUNITY LIASON
-
Managing contacts in database
-
Event planning, public education, and awareness, Know Your Rights presentations.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Spanish and English fluency is required

Four-year degree or comparable experience

Highly organized

Attention to detail

Strong writing skills

Excellent interpersonal skills

Cultural sensitivity and prior experience working with immigrants

Data management experience and strong computer literacy skills, including Google email and Drive

Prior administrative experience in a not-for-profit office is preferred
